Course description

This course will refresh and reinforce your concept of the head and neck anatomy, including the bones, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, glands, lymphatic system, and the temporomandibular joint with a special focus on structures related to the oral cavity. This knowledge will prove invaluable for dental dental hygienists as they provide oral care.
Objectives
- Know the anatomical regions of the head and neck, and identify key landmarks
- Study the bones comprising the cranium, face, and neck, with an emphasis on the features, functions, and articulations of these bones as pertaining to oral health
- Explore the various muscles responsible for facial expressions, mastication, swallowing, and speech
- Gain insights into the vascular and neural pathways, to comprehend pain referral patterns, and understand and the potential implications for dental procedures.
- Learn about the lymphatic drainage of the head and neck and its role in immunity and disease spread
- Explore the anatomy, function, and potential disorders of the TMJ, and understand its relevance to dental health

Claire Jeong, RDH, MS
